In a statement released Thursday on its official Instagram page, the telecommunications company admitted to miscalculating the pricing adjustment and acknowledged its error using colloquial Nigerian English: “We don cast. We get it and admit it. Let’s just say na mistake.

The company directly addressed frustrated customers, acknowledging their anger over waking up to the dramatic price increase. While noting there were various reasons behind the adjustment, MTN chose to focus on accepting responsibility rather than offering explanations.

Taking advantage of the Valentine’s season theme, MTN appealed to customers not to “stay angry,” stressing the importance of their relationship with subscribers and requesting forgiveness. “You matter die, and we will never stop showing you how much,” the statement read.

The controversy has sparked wider discussions about telecom pricing practices in Nigeria, with some customers calling for boycotts and demanding increased regulatory oversight of data pricing in the telecommunications sector.

The company has pledged to maintain better service standards moving forward, though specific details about potential price adjustments were not included in the statement.
