The partnership framework emerged during a high-level visit by UNDP Permanent Representative to Nigeria, Ms. Elsie Attafuah, to Governor Abdullahi Sule in Lafia on Tuesday.

Ms. Attafuah announced that the UN agency would strengthen its collaboration with Nasarawa State across multiple sectors, with particular emphasis on innovation, digitisation, and knowledge-driven economic initiatives designed to create employment opportunities for the state’s youth population.

The UNDP representative praised what she described as “impressive developmental initiatives” under Governor Sule’s administration, which sparked the international organisation’s interest in deepening its engagement with the state government.

Collaboration for development

“Discussion with the state government has reached advanced level to deepen collaboration towards accelerating the sustainable development goals,” Attafuah stated during the meeting.

Governor Sule highlighted the state’s abundant natural resources and investment potential, particularly emphasising vast agricultural land and renewable energy prospects that could support both farming and mining operations.

The governor noted that Nasarawa State possesses extensive territory suitable for agricultural development alongside diverse investment opportunities, particularly in renewable energy applications for agricultural and mining purposes.

Following the discussions, Sule directed members of the state Executive Council to coordinate with the UNDP team for field visits to key agricultural and mining sites across the state, allowing international partners to assess opportunities firsthand.

The partnership framework encompasses several critical areas including agriculture development, skills acquisition programmes, mining sector enhancement, and renewable energy projects. These sectors align with both state development priorities and UN sustainable development objectives.

The collaboration builds upon existing relationships between the state government and UNDP, with both parties working to expand successful programmes while introducing new initiatives targeting economic prosperity and job creation.

The visit follows preliminary meetings between UNDP representatives and state government officials exploring various collaboration opportunities.

The planned site visits by UNDP teams is a crucial next step in the partnership development process, allowing international experts to evaluate specific locations and projects for potential investment and technical support.
