The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has warned the public about the increasing rate of cholera cases across the country as the rainy season intensifies.
The warning was made in a statement signed by its Director-General, Dr. Jide Idris, on June 13 and made available on its official X account. They stated that the total number of suspected cases from 96 LGAs in 30 states between January 1st and June 11th, 2024, is 1,141, while confirmed cases are 65 and 30 deaths. The NCDC noted that Abia, Cross River, Bauchi, Delta, Katsina, Bayelsa, Zamfara, Imo, Nasarawa, and Lagos states contributed 90% to the cholera burden.
However, the centre stated that the multi-sectoral National Cholera Technical Working Group, led by the NCDC, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, the World Health Organisation, and the United Nations Children’s Fund, amongst other partners, has been providing support to the affected states. This support includes risk communication, active case search, laboratory diagnosis, case management, the provision of response commodities, water sanitation and hygiene (WASH) interventions, and the dissemination of cholera awareness jingles in both English and local languages.
