The Niger State Government has issued a directive requiring all civil servants who received multiple salary payments in February 2025 to immediately refund the overpaid amounts.
In a joint circular released on March 18 by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) Niger State Councils, affected workers are instructed to return the excess payments to the Niger State Government Salary Account: 1011277597 at Zenith Bank.
The notice, signed by NLC State Chairman Comrade Idris A. Lafene and TUC State Chairman Comrade Ibrahim Gana, outlines specific procedures for the refund process. Workers must include their full name and control number in the payment narration and submit a hard copy of the receipt to the Treasury Unit of the Ministry of Finance, either individually or through their branch union.
“Those who opt to use POS Tellers should ensure they make a photocopy of the teller immediately to avoid loss of record by ink fading,” the circular states.
The directive comes with a stern warning: “Any affected staff that fails to refund the multiple payment component before the 24th of March 2025 shall not receive any further salary payment from Niger State Government and will be sanctioned based on the provision of civil service rules as it concerns financial misconduct.”
The government has set a deadline of March 24, 2025, for all refunds to be completed, with the circular superseding any previous directives on the matter.
Officials have not disclosed how many workers were affected by the payroll error or the total amount of money involved.
