The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed gratitude to the Republic of Ghana for fulfilling its promise to reconstruct and formally hand over a property belonging to the High Commission of Nigeria in Accra.
The reconstructed building, a block of four-bedroom flats, was handed over on Wednesday during a ceremony attended by top officials from both nations. The keys to the property were presented by Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Mrs. Shirley Ayorkor Botchway, to Ambassador Chimezie Ogu, Director of the Foreign Service Academy, Lagos, who represented Nigeria.
The property was demolished in 2020 by Ghanaian authorities, an act that drew widespread condemnation from the Nigerian government and triggered diplomatic tensions. However, through high-level diplomatic engagements, Ghana pledged to rebuild the structure, a commitment now fulfilled.
In a statement signed by the acting spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the Nigerian government commended Ghana for the gesture, describing it as a “commendable act” and a testament to Ghana’s dedication to fostering stronger bilateral relations.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs applauds the laudable gesture and affirms that the reconstructed building embodies the spirit of cooperation and mutual respect that defines the relationship between the Republic of Nigeria and the sister Nation, Ghana,” the statement read.
The Nigerian government emphasized that the gesture underscores the importance of collaboration in strengthening the longstanding friendship between the two West African nations.
This development is seen as a positive milestone in the ties between Nigeria and Ghana, signaling both countries’ commitment to resolving disputes amicably and promoting unity in the region.
