In a statement issued in Abuja, Akuneme revealed that the group consisted of 51 males and 11 females who were escorted from the NIS headquarters in Abuja to the Illela Border by a team of eight officers led by Inspector Mamoud Sadiq. The convoy of two buses arrived at the border post at approximately 8:00 pm on Friday.

“Upon their arrival, I directed the Assistant Controller in charge of Human Resources, Adamu Mshelia, who also doubled as the Officer in Charge of Anti-Smuggling Unit (ANTISOM) to oversee the proper documentation of the repatriated individuals,” Akuneme stated.

Following completion of the necessary procedures, the irregular migrants were transferred to officers of the Niger Republic Police at the Birnin Konni Control Post, where they underwent another round of screening and documentation before being received by the Commisere, the local police chief.

Meanwhile, Akuneme also reported that mega and mini Forward Operating Bases (FOB) construction is underway at the Illela Control Post. This upgrade, initiated by NIS Controller-General Kemi Nandap, is part of ongoing efforts to address irregular migration across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

“The construction company has commenced land clearance and demolition of some dilapidated and unserviceable structures,” he noted. “We appreciate the CG for this upgrade, which aligns with her commitment to curbing irregular and prohibited migration across the country.”

The Controller assured the public that the situation remains calm in both Illela and Tangaza areas, with military and security personnel maintaining a presence to address potential threats from Lakurawa bandits.
