Nigeria plans to launch a nationwide survey to collect critical data on children’s and women’s well-being. The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and the United Nations Children’s Fund will jointly carry out the initiative, which includes the 7th round of the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS7) and the National Immunisation Coverage Survey (NICS).
During the Survey Design Workshop in Lagos, the Statistician General of the Federation and Chief Executive Officer of NBS, Prince Adeyemi Adeniran, emphasised the survey’s goal, which is to provide current information on child and maternal health, education, nutrition, and immunisation to inform government policies and programmes.
“When we say aspirations of government and people of Nigeria, we are saying that the survey must be designed in a way that meets the government expectation to be able to use the results of the survey to measure the performance and progress made in the area of state priorities, as well as meet up with the data required to assess our country when it comes to progress made in the area of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Renewed Hope Agenda of this present administration,” he stated.
He added that the workshop served as a pre-stage for the survey, gathering key stakeholders, including officials from various government ministries, departments, agencies, state statistical offices, and civil society organisations focused on women, children, adolescents, and men. The purpose, he said, is to design and implement MICS7/NICS to reflect the Nigerian government’s and citizens’ aspirations while also identifying a sufficient sample size for quality assessments.
“Stakeholders are here to design the questionnaire for the survey tools we will use to interview the respondents across the country. It is also a workshop where we are going to determine the number of households and the number of areas that we are going to be visiting such that we will be able to cover the nooks and crannies of the country and also have enough samples that will represent the responses or information from the entire country,” he added.
