The Nigerian entertainment industry is reeling from the deaths of two prominent figures within days of each other, sending shockwaves through Nollywood and the broader creative community. Late Omotola Odunsi

The confirmation came via an emotional Instagram post by actress Bakare Zainab, who simply wrote, “Goodnight. Omotola, rest well.” The brevity of the message is an indication of the shock within the industry at losing someone many considered a rising star.

Ashabi, who is known as the babymama of controversial singer Portable, shared particularly poignant memories of her final interactions with Odunsi. She recounted meeting the actress earlier this year during the filming of “Deputy,” where both women had made plans for future collaborations that will now never materialise.

Omoh dis one shock me oooo Aunty Tola. You’re one of the best actors I’m rooting for. Saw you earlier this year when I was shooting Deputy and we promised to feature each other in our next project, but now you laboured and didn’t wait to reap what you sowed,” Ashabi wrote in her tribute.

She revealed that Odunsi frequently reached out to her during late-night conversations, offering encouragement and advice, making the loss feel particularly personal. “Most of your wishes we talked about didn’t even come true. GOD, we can’t question you oooo. Death is deep,” she added, reflecting the sense of unfulfilled potential that has marked reactions to the actress’s passing.

Late Ifesinachi Onyekere a.k.a. Fish Magnet

In a separate tragedy that has further darkened the entertainment landscape, Ifesinachi Onyekere, widely known as Fish Magnet and recognised as a popular fish entrepreneur with connections to the entertainment industry, was reportedly killed following an abduction at his residence in Anambra State.

The incident occurred last Saturday at Onyekere’s home in Ezinifite village, located in the Okpuno area of Awka South Local Government Area. According to eyewitness accounts, assailants arrived in an ash-coloured Lexus SUV, shot him in the leg, and subsequently abducted him using his own Toyota Corolla vehicle. The circumstances surrounding his death and the motives behind the attack remain unclear to authorities.

Nollywood actress Destiny Etiko has joined voices calling for improved security measures across Nigeria following news of Onyekere’s violent death. Taking to Instagram, she expressed her heartbreak and stated the urgent need for national attention to rising violence affecting citizens, including those in the entertainment industry.

The back-to-back tragedies have cast a sombre mood over Nigeria’s creative community.
