A Mark of Respect for Stitchie

Members of the Kristofarian movement, under the banner of the NGO, Gospel Reggae Team Initiative, have thrown their support to fundraising efforts for gospel reggae legend Cleve “Lt. Stitchie” Laing, who suffered a life-threatening brain haemorrhage in September 2024. In a chat with AkweyaTV, the leader of the Kristofarians, Lucy Awe Peters, who is popularly known as Mama Lucee, said her group is supporting the fundraising effort as a mark of respect for Lt. Stitchie, the only dancehall artist to have achieved 14 Number 1 songs in a single calendar year.

A severe brain haemorrhage left Stitchie unresponsive

“We are hearing from his wife and other friends in Jamaica that Stitchie is showing encouraging signs of recovery,” Mama Lucee said. She said her group learned that despite the cheery news, Stitchie remains in urgent need of specialised rehabilitation and ongoing community support. The iconic musician, known for his powerful messages of hope and faith, faces a long and challenging road to full recovery, prompting his family to appeal for assistance to secure the best possible care.

Prayers and Financial Support

Mrs. Sophia Laing, Cleve’s wife and the organiser of a GoFundMe campaign, shared an update on his condition. “We are diligently looking for the appropriate facility that can provide Cleve with the care he needs. In the meantime, we are requesting your prayers and financial support to help make this possible,” she stated.

Mrs. Laing said despite not yet being able to speak definitively, “Stitchie” continues to make sounds, and his family is holding steadfast to their faith. “Isaiah 60:22 says, ‘I the Lord will make it happen when the time is right.’ This is one of God’s promises that the Laing family is holding on to with dear life as we continue to trust the Almighty Yahweh on Cleve ‘Stitchie’ Laing’s behalf,” Mrs. Laing shared in a recent update. She added that physiotherapy sessions are ongoing with new methods, and even small improvements are met with gratitude, acknowledging, “God has brought him a mighty long way.”

Global Impact, Global Solidarity

From Abuja, Nigeria, Mama Lucee, whose latest album titled New Heights was produced in Jamaica with the support of Lt. Stitchie, said she and her group have been engaged in prayers for the quick recovery of the artist who is mentioned in the “Who’s Who in Reggae Music” section of the Guinness Book of World Records. Stitchie is also known for being the first dancehall artist to sign with Atlantic Records and chart on the Billboard charts in the US. His extensive discography and impactful live performances have cemented his legacy in the music industry.

Cleve “Stitchie” Laing’s contributions to reggae and gospel music are monumental, with his impactful lyrics resonating globally. As he embarks on this hopeful journey of healing, the family is appealing to his extensive network of friends, fans, and supporters to help cover the substantial costs of his rehabilitation and ongoing medical expenses.

Appreciations

A GoFundMe campaign has been established to raise the necessary funds. They say all contributions will directly fund a rehabilitation facility, medical expenses, and continuous care to support Cleve’s recovery. The Laing family has expressed profound gratitude for the “overwhelming outpouring of love, prayers, and contributions from fans and friends around the world” during this critical time.

Previous updates from Mrs. Laing highlighted the continuous round-the-clock care Cleve has been receiving in a private nursing home, where physiotherapy has been successful in maintaining his mobility and strength. A new feeding option has also been introduced, with positive outcomes anticipated.
