This year’s global theme, “Youth Empowerment Through AI and Digital Skills,” highlights the increasing importance of equipping young people for a rapidly evolving digital economy. Speaking on the occasion, Executive Director and CEO of Nistad Foundation, Ms. Ada Jabaru, stressed the urgent need to ensure that Nigeria’s youth are not left behind in the global technological shift.

“Our goal at Nistad Foundation is to provide access to education and skills that prepare young people for today’s world of work,” Jabaru said. “We’re especially focused on making sure girls and young people from disadvantaged backgrounds are part of the tech future. We believe they can be leaders and creators in the AI space, not just consumers.”

She noted that AI and digital technologies could help address several pressing challenges in Nigeria, notably insecurity, access to healthcare, water scarcity, and electricity shortages.

Nistad has been actively implementing initiatives that equip young people with practical digital competencies. These include training in AI, women’s empowerment programs, entrepreneurship support, primary healthcare outreach, and job linkage services. The foundation also partners with organisations across Nigeria, Africa, the United States, and the United Kingdom to promote inclusion and innovation.

“As we mark a decade of World Youth Skills Day, we urge governments, schools, and development partners to prioritise investments in future-focused skills,” Jabaru urged. “With the right support, young people can become powerful drivers of change.”
