The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called off its planned nationwide protest against proposed telecommunications tariff increases, following successful negotiations with the federal government, the organisation’s General Secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja, announced Tuesday.
The NLC had originally scheduled a mass demonstration nationwide at Nigerian Telecommunications Commission (NCC) offices to protest a proposed 50 percent tariff hike. However, after government intervention, the union suspended its protest action.
“The Federal Government invited us to a meeting where an agreement was reached to establish a 10-member committee to address our key concerns,” Ugboaja said in a statement to state councils and affiliate organisations.
“Our protest has already achieved success, as the government has conceded to some of our demands without the need for an actual demonstration.”
Ugboaja commended NLC members for their support and urged them to remain patient as negotiations continue.
The 10-member committee is expected to examine the proposed telecommunications tariff increases and work towards a resolution that balances the interests of consumers and telecommunications providers.
