Renowned broadcast journalist and CEO of the Nigeria Music and Video Awards (NMVA), Cally Ikpe, has successfully defended his PhD thesis at Pan-Atlantic University, Lagos. Dr. Ikpe’s research focused on “Media Reportage and the Politics of Violence in Benue and Zamfara States, Nigeria,” reflecting his new passion for advocating a violence-free Nigeria.
The study examined the ongoing conflicts in Benue and Zamfara states, addressing the impacts of killer herdsmen and bandits respectively. Dr. Ikpe faced significant challenges during his research, including data collection in dangerous areas and balancing professional commitments with academic pursuits.
“It was a tough call,” Dr. Ikpe stated, describing the hurdles he overcame, including relocation to Abuja and completing a leadership course at Birmingham City University, UK. He praised Pan-Atlantic University’s rigorous academic standards, noting that while frustrating at times, the process resulted in research “we can proudly show off to the whole world.”
Dr. Ikpe plans to leverage his academic achievements to further his Violence-free Nigeria Initiative. “Expect to see and hear more about that project in the coming days,” he said.
Despite his new focus on conflict resolution, Dr. Ikpe reassured fans that he hasn’t abandoned the entertainment industry. He revealed plans to revamp the annual Nigeria Music Video Awards, promising “an NMVA of the highest quality” with details to be announced soon.
Expressing pride in the Nigerian music industry’s current success, Dr. Ikpe concluded by thanking those who supported him throughout his doctoral journey.
