The embattled leader of IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, tendered an apology to the court for all his previous outbursts during his appearance today before a newly assigned trial judge, Justice James Kolawole Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja.
Recall that at his last appearance in court, on the 10th of February, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu had lashed out at the trial judge, Justice Binta Nyako; the prosecuting counsel, Adeboyega Awomolo (SAN); and his defence team.
However, at today’s hearing, the counsel representing Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, Kanu Agabi, (SAN), issued an apology on behalf of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. He stated that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu was sorry for his outburst, which was out of anger. The apology was made to Justice Binta Nyako, prosecuting counsel Adeboyega Awomolo (SAN), and his defence team.
Responding to this apology, counsel representing the federal government, Adeboyega (SAN), said he has forgiven Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, as he is not a persecutor but a prosecutor and that they would ensure that they do their due diligence.
The presiding judge, Justice Omotosho, also apologized on Nnamdi Kanu’s behalf.
He noted that, while reading through the file, the defendant was first arraigned at age 47 in 2015, and now he is 57 years old. He confirmed that the defendant’s anger was justified, as “it’s hurting to have a case for 10 years and it seems not to be going anywhere.”
Therefore, he asked that the defendant be forgiven.
