Nigeria’s Ademola Adeyemi-Bero has been selected as the Chairman of the OPEC Board of Governors for 2025, the organisation announced at its 189th Conference meeting.
In a statement signed by Nneamaka Okafor, the spokesperson to the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, she said the appointment reaffirmed Nigeria’s leadership in the global energy sector.
Adeyemi-Bero, a veteran with 38 years of experience in the oil and gas industry, currently serves as CEO of FIRST Exploration & Petroleum Development Company Limited (FIRST E&P), a Nigerian independent oil company. His appointment underscores Nigeria’s continued influence in global energy circles.
The Nigerian government celebrated the selection, with Senator Heineken Lokpobiri describing the appointment as a “testament to the country’s active contributions to the global oil industry.”
Lokpobiri emphasised that the appointment provides Nigeria with a strategic platform to advocate for balanced energy policies that consider the interests of both oil-producing and consuming nations.
Alongside Adeyemi-Bero’s appointment, the conference also extended Secretary General Haitham Al Ghais’s tenure for another three years, starting August 1, 2025. Saudi Arabia’s Adeeb Al-Aama was simultaneously named Alternate Chairman of the Board of Governors.
The minister further expressed profound gratitude to Mr. Gabriel Aduda, the outgoing Nigerian OPEC Governor, for what he described as his exemplary service, acknowledging Aduda’s instrumental role in advancing Nigeria’s interests within OPEC and ensuring the country’s influential presence in global energy discussions.
The OPEC Conference, which brought together representatives from member countries, focused on critical internal matters and reviewed reports from the Secretary-General and Economic Commission Board.
