Public Outcry
Ebonyi State is facing mounting public outcry following the arrest of Comrade Igboyaka O. Igboyaka, the National Youth President of the Ohanaeze Youth Council Worldwide. His detention has sparked concerns over the suppression of voices advocating for community safety, raising urgent questions about the priorities of the state’s leadership.
Comrade Igboyaka was reportedly taken into custody after issuing a public warning about an imminent attack on certain communities in Ebonyi State. In a press statement and direct communication with Governor Francis Nwifuru, he had alerted authorities to the looming threat. However, rather than being commended for his proactive efforts, he now finds himself detained under controversial circumstances.

Arrest Sparks Public Backlash
The arrest is being widely condemned by activists, youth leaders, and community stakeholders, who view it as an attempt to silence those speaking out on security issues. Former Akweya Youth National President, Comrade Onkpe Augustine Onaji, expressed outrage, stating that silencing community leaders in this manner only fosters fear and unrest.
“The National Youth President should be commended for his vigilance. Instead, he is behind bars while those responsible for security lapses remain unaccountable,” Onaji said.

His sentiments were echoed by Mr. Odanwu, the Ishielu North Development Center Coordinator, who highlighted a key concern: “If the President warned the governor four days before the attack, why was no action taken? The focus should be on holding those in power accountable, not punishing the messenger.”
Call for Immediate Release
The detention of Comrade Igboyaka has further fuelled tensions in Ebonyi State, with many demanding his immediate release. His supporters argue that his arrest diverts attention from the real security threats facing the region and reflects a worrying trend of government suppression.
“This is not just about one individual; it is about the right of community leaders to speak out and protect their people,” Onaji emphasised.
All eyes are on Governor Nwifuru and the security agencies involved in the arrest. The situation has reignited debates on the government’s commitment to tackling violence and ensuring that those who work to protect communities are supported rather than silenced.
