In commemoration of World Malaria Day 2025, the Oyo State Government has unveiled a series of initiatives to eliminate malaria across the state, including operationalising a malaria reference laboratory to ensure accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.

During an event held yesterday at Akinyele Local Government Area Secretariat in Moniya, Ibadan, Health Commissioner Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi announced that Governor Seyi Makinde has released counterpart funds for an upcoming campaign to distribute insecticide-treated nets to every household in the state.
“Malaria has remained a relentless adversary in Nigeria, claiming countless lives and undermining the well-being of our communities,” Dr. Ajetunmobi stated. “Children under five and pregnant women bear the greatest burden, as malaria not only robs individuals of their health and opportunity but also stalls socio-economic progress.”
The commissioner highlighted this year’s theme, “Malaria Ends with Us: Reinvest, Reimagine, Reignite,” with the slogan “Stay Committed,” noting that the Ministry of Health has intensified community sensitisation efforts, expanded diagnostic testing and treatment access, and enhanced surveillance systems through partnerships with various organisations.

Chairman of Akinyele Local Government Area, Hon. Akinwale Akinyele, represented by the Head of Local Government Administration, Mrs. Olaronke Ige, commended the Ministry of Health for extending malaria prevention services to grassroots communities. He encouraged residents to take malaria prevention seriously by properly using insecticide-treated nets and promptly seeking medical care when needed.
Representatives from several partner organisations, including the World Health Organization, Breakthrough Action Nigeria, US President’s Malaria Initiative for States (PMI-S), GHSC-PSM, and Malaria Consortium, praised the state government for creating an enabling environment for effective partnerships and pledged continued support for achieving zero malaria in Oyo State.
The event concluded with free malaria testing, distribution of prevention materials, health education sessions, and a road walk to raise public awareness across communities.
