Protests erupted today in the bustling Mokola neighbourhood of Ibadan, Oyo State, with demonstrators criticising the harsh economic conditions, skyrocketing food costs, and the withdrawal of petrol subsidies.
Placard-waving youths flooded the streets, chanting slogans condemning the skyrocketing cost of living. Messages emblazoned on their placards captured the frustration and anger simmering among the populace. Phrases “like “End food hike & inflation” and “Insecurity not our birthright” underscored the severity of the situation. Some directed their grievances towards political figures, with signs bearing messages such as “Mr president this is not Hope, this is shege.”
Despite the peaceful nature of the protest, a large police presence hovered over the scene, indicating the authority’s alertness following earlier demonstrations in other regions of the country. Armed officers closely monitored the gathering, ready to preserve order and prevent potential problems.
The recent withdrawal of petrol subsidies and the unification of foreign exchange windows are at the foundation of the agitation, actions that have aggravated Nigerians’ already terrible economic conditions. The decision to cut subsidies has provoked widespread discontent, with citizens suffering the burden of sharp fuel price increases and resulting inflationary pressures on critical items such as food.
This demonstration in Oyo State follows similar protests witnessed in Kano, Minna, and other nationwide regions just last week.
