Abuja-based philanthropist and chairman of the Federal Government College Otobi’s School Based Management Committee (SBMC), Mr. Abba Adaudu, has intervened in the hostel crisis at the college in Otobi, Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State.
Mr. Adaudu, who assumed the role of SBMC chairman just seven months ago, swiftly addressed one of the college’s most pressing issues in his first week by promising to rectify it. The Ogiri Oko Boys Hostel, a hundred-bed facility, was in a state of disrepair, causing significant accommodation challenges for students before Mr. Abba Adaudu initiated its complete rehabilitation.
At the commissioning ceremony held on Thursday at the school premises, the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Maman, represented by a director in the ministry, Mrs. Okenwa, commended Mr. Adaudu’s philanthropic gesture. He noted that such actions would greatly impact the students’ academic lives and urged other affluent individuals in the community to follow suit.
Similarly, the Senate Minority Leader and senator representing Benue South Senatorial District, Sen. Abba Moro, who commissioned the project, praised Mr. Adaudu, saying, “Mr. Abba Adaudu is known for his generosity and intervention in areas of need. I urge him to continue his altruistic deeds, and I pray that God should continue to bless him.”
In an interview with AkweyaTV, Mr. Abba Adaudu explained his motivation behind the development gesture, stating, “To me, development is the aggregate of patches of progress. With the government seemingly overwhelmed, the health and well-being of young people in school hostels are paramount. I felt a compelling need for immediate intervention, so I filled in the gap. Life must be lived by alleviating someone from a given difficulty, no matter how small.”
The senator also pledged to undertake the construction of a hundred-bed female hostel to complement the completely rehabilitated boys’ hostel.
The college principal expressed gratitude for Mr. Adaudu’s unprecedented gesture, declaring that the entire college community would forever remain indebted to him. He highlighted that out of the five chairmen that had led the SBMC, only the incumbent had deemed it necessary to contribute on such a significant scale.
The event was marked by goodwill messages from dignitaries across the country. There were colourful cultural displays and the adornment of the donor and the school principal in Akweya traditional attire by the third-class chief of the community, Chief Assan Roggers, who also represented the Och’Idoma, HRM John Odogbo Elaigwu.
