Police officers have fired teargas at protesters during the “Fearless In October” protest over bad governance in Abuja, Nigeria.
The protesters gathered today, October 1, 2024, in the Utako area of Abuja, Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) today. The demonstration, dubbed “FearlessInOctober,” saw participants waving Nigerian flags and carrying banners with slogans such as “EndBadGovernance,” “DiasporaVoting,” and “EndHighLivingCosts.”
Law enforcement officers intervened, dispersing the crowd shortly after the protest began.
This event follows a similar demonstration held two months prior in August, known as the #EndBadGovernance protests. Both movements share common themes, with young citizens expressing discontent over recent government policies, particularly the removal of petrol subsidies and increases in electricity tariffs.
The “FearlessInOctober” protest gained traction through social media campaigns, reflecting a growing trend of online organisations for civil demonstrations in Nigeria.
This protest started this morning despite President Tinubu’s plans for a 30-day conference to address the challenges facing young Nigerians. He had announced during his address to the nation on the occasion of Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day celebration.
