Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has directed the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and other agencies to implement urgent recommendations for overhauling the national power grid following its ninth collapse this year on Thursday.
The directive comes from a committee established by Adelabu on October 22 to address recurring grid failures. According to the minister’s special adviser on strategic communications, Bolaji Tunji, the committee has outlined several key recommendations to stabilise the power system.
The proposed measures include conducting equipment audits, enhancing transmission line maintenance, and securing major investments from both public and private sectors. The committee also called for implementing reliability-centred maintenance protocols and expediting critical ongoing projects.
Additional recommendations focus on modernising the grid through replacing outdated equipment, upgrading SCADA and telecommunication systems, and deploying IoT devices across generation units and transmission lines. The committee also emphasised the need for secure gas contracts and stronger measures against vandalism and energy theft.
Thursday’s grid disturbance was triggered by a sudden frequency surge from 50.33Hz to 51.44Hz, according to TCN reports. The transmission company has pledged to intensify efforts toward ensuring uninterrupted power supply while implementing these comprehensive reforms to prevent future grid collapses.
