The false list, which began circulating online Friday, sparked widespread debate among supporters of the Tinubu administration, particularly due to the inclusion of Yesufu, a prominent government critic.
According to officials, the viral document contained 102 names, contradicting President Tinubu’s actual announcement of 66 national honour recipients during his Democracy Day address to the joint session of the National Assembly on Thursday, June 13.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Temitope Ajayi, addressed the misinformation in a Facebook statement, calling the circulating list “fake news” that should be dismissed.
“The story on a viral list of national honours featuring the name of Aisha Yesufu and others credited to the Leadership newspaper is fake news. It should be ignored,” Ajayi stated.
He stated that the presidency has not released any additional names beyond those announced in President Tinubu’s official address to the National Assembly.
As part of Nigeria’s 2025 Democracy Day celebrations, President Tinubu recognised 66 individuals who contributed significantly to the country’s democratic development.
Notable posthumous recipients included:
- Shehu Musa Yar’Adua – Former Chief of Staff and pro-democracy advocate
- Kudirat Abiola – Wife of MKO Abiola and martyr of the June 12 democratic struggle
- Professor Humphrey Nwosu – Former National Electoral Commission Chairman who oversaw the 1993 elections
The honours were conferred to acknowledge the recipients’ sacrifices and contributions to Nigeria’s democratic transformation.
Activist Aisha Yesufu also addressed the false claims on her social media platform yesterday, writing: “God forbid!!!!! It can never be this Aisha Yesufu. Thank you.”
