President Bola Ahmed Tinubu unveiled a government restructuring plan, including ministerial reassignments, new appointments, and the reorganisation of key federal ministries yesterday in a bid to enhance his administration’s efficiency.
The Ministry of Niger Delta Development will be transformed into the Ministry of Regional Development, taking on expanded oversight of all Regional Development Commissions. This new ministry will supervise the Niger Delta Development Commission, South East Development Commission, North East Development Commission, and North West Development Commission.
The restructuring also includes the dissolution of the Ministry of Sports Development, with its functions transferring to the National Sports Commission. Shehu Dikko has been appointed as the Commission’s chairman.
In another consolidation, the Federal Ministry of Tourism will merge with the Federal Ministry of Arts and Culture to create the Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, streamlining the government’s approach to cultural and tourism development.
The shake-up extends to personnel changes, with ten ministers receiving new portfolio assignments and five ministers being discharged from their duties. President Tinubu also nominated seven new ministers, whose names will be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation.
Former Sports Minister Sunday Akin Dare has been appointed as Special Adviser to the President on Public Communication and Orientation, operating from the Ministry of Information and National Orientation.
The implementation of these changes is expected to begin immediately, though some aspects will require Senate approval before taking effect.
