At the 72nd Annual Council Meeting, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) appointed Professor Thomas Brima Rick Yormah as its 21st Chairman of the Council.
The Head of Public Affairs at WAEC headquarters in Accra, Ghana, Demianus Ojijeogu, made the statement over the weekend.
Taking over the reins from Prof. Ato Essuman of the Republic of Ghana, Prof. Yormah emerged as the new chairman of the Council after a week-long deliberation at the WAEC Council meeting held in the Republic of Sierra Leone.
The opening ceremony included renowned guests, like Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh of Sierra Leone, who represented President Julius Maada Bio.
“The council has played a prominent role in the educational development of the sub-region over the past 72 years and has, indeed, served as a catalyst for the educational reforms that have evolved in the member countries,” the vice president noted.
Reflecting on the council’s journey since its inception in 1952, Sierra Leone’s Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, Conrad Sackey, praised WAEC’s persistent dedication to nurturing educational excellence and preserving rigorous standards. He stated the council’s vital role in advancing educational development throughout its storied history and stressed how it has shaped educational reforms within member nations.
