The advisory board of the Nigeria Prize for Science unveiled Professor Amadi as the deserving recipient of the 2023 edition, recognising his innovative work in developing cutting-edge respiratory technologies aimed at safeguarding the lives of newborns in Nigeria.

Professor Amadi’s award-winning innovations encompass a range of revolutionary devices, including a non-invasive Neonatal Ventilator, an Oxygen Delivery Blender System, and an Oxygen Splitter System, all ingeniously powered by solar energy. These groundbreaking solutions have undergone rigorous testing in various Nigerian hospitals, unequivocally proving their cost-effectiveness and significantly reducing neonatal care expenses.

President Bola Tinubu, along with Nigerians, the academic community, and scientists nationwide, extended warm congratulations to the esteemed professor for his remarkable contributions to the field.

In his congratulatory statement, President Tinubu expressed his delight in the positive impact of Professor Amadi’s innovations. He noted that the solar-powered neonatal ventilator will not only reduce neonatal care costs but will also save lives in hospitals that have adopted this technology.

“Professor Amadi’s tireless efforts and dedication to developing affordable medical systems are truly commendable. This significant work by this great Nigerian scientist will contribute to keeping more Nigerian children alive after birth and preparing them for a better future as positive changemakers and influencers both at home and abroad,” the president stated.

The president further extended his gratitude to Nigeria LNG Limited for awarding Professor Amadi the $100,000 Prize for pioneering neonatal care innovation. He emphasised that this gesture aligns with the Nigerian government’s commitment to collaborating with the private sector and academia to achieve more success in critical sectors of Nigeria’s economy, including healthcare, education, technology, and innovation.

A distinguished Professor of Medical Technology at Imo State University and a visiting Professor of Medical Engineering and Technology at Imperial College London, Professor Amadi, has received widespread acclaim for his groundbreaking contributions to the field of healthcare technology. His innovative solutions promise to have a profound and lasting impact on the health and well-being of newborns in Nigeria and beyond.

The 2023 Nigeria Prize for Science not only recognises Professor Amadi’s exceptional work but also underscores the importance of fostering scientific innovation for the betterment of society, particularly in critical sectors like healthcare.
