The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) has announced a 33% increase in annual capitation fees, raising them from N15,000 to N20,000, which took effect January 1, 2025, as part of measures to address financial sustainability challenges.
In a memo to members, newly elected PSN President Ibrahim Tanko Ayuba outlined several challenges facing the profession, including threats to academic pharmacy and the need for legal interventions in community and hospital pharmacy practice.
Ayuba highlighted concerns about “unlawful discriminatory practices” limiting pharmacists’ career progression in specialised university systems, signalling potential legal action to address these issues. He also emphasised the need to strengthen ongoing legislative initiatives at the National Assembly.
The President addressed financial sustainability concerns, particularly regarding the organisation’s national conferences, which currently operate with nearly 100% subsidy for members. Despite the financial strain, Ayuba indicated reluctance to disrupt this arrangement given its popularity among members who attend from across the globe.
“While encouraging colleagues to be part of the conferences, we shall be conscious of quality control and assurance for our profession, which is about assuming centenary status,” Ayuba stated in the memo.
The fee increase comes as the organisation faces rising operational costs amid high inflation. The PSN leadership assured members of transparency in financial management and promised to implement cost-cutting measures where possible.
AkweyaTV, however, learnt that the increase in fees did not occur only at the PSN but also at other technical and interest groups, such as the Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria (ACPN) and the pharmacy regulatory body, the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN).
The President also announced plans for his inauguration and the investiture of new PSN Fellows in the first quarter of 2025, noting that professional defence and preservation would be his priority in the initial months of his tenure.
