The Association of Public Health Physicians of Nigeria (APHPN) is embarking on an ambitious initiative to significantly bolster primary healthcare across the nation. Under the leadership of its newly appointed President, Dr. Terfa Kene, the association has committed to adopting at least 222 primary healthcare (PHC) facilities in Nigeria, according to a post by the president on his LinkedIn page.
This significant undertaking will involve the installation of solar power systems in the selected facilities to improve their operational capacity and reliability. Furthermore, the APHPN will provide consistent technical support and organise regular medical outreach programmes to further enhance the services offered by these crucial healthcare centres.

Dr. Kene, who holds a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from the Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, is a seasoned public health consultant, epidemiologist, medical statistician, and CEO/team lead of Ave Health Sense Ltd. He expressed his enthusiasm for the project, highlighting the APHPN’s dedication to strengthening the foundation of Nigeria’s healthcare system.
The Association of Public Health Physicians of Nigeria (APHPN), established in 1974 and officially registered in 2007, is the national body representing medical doctors with postgraduate expertise in public health and community medicine. Its members are actively involved in shaping health policy and delivering healthcare services at all levels in Nigeria, as well as collaborating with international organisations.
Dr. Kene brings extensive experience to his new role, having provided technical support for numerous key public health initiatives in Nigeria. His background includes work with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other international partners, demonstrating his expertise in epidemiology, programme evaluation, and public health diplomacy. He is also a proponent of utilising digital solutions in public health and addressing critical public health nutrition concerns.

The new APHPN President’s commitment to adopting and supporting 222 PHC facilities signals a strong dedication to improving access to quality healthcare at the grassroots level. The focus on sustainable energy solutions and ongoing support, in the face of poor electricity supply from the grid, will enhance the functionality and impact of primary healthcare services for communities across Nigeria. This initiative, driven by the leadership of Dr. Kene, will be a significant step forward in strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare infrastructure.
