A roadside bombing in Zamfara State has claimed the lives of six people while injuring eight others. The act, which occurred on Wednesday, was said to have been carried out by the Lakurawa terrorist group.
The tragic incident occurred on the Dansadau-Gusau Road in Maru Local Government Area, where a Volkswagen Golf 3 vehicle ran over an explosive device strategically planted by bandits after completing community road work. According to resident Abdullahi Dansadau, the explosion was instantaneous and catastrophic.
Zamfara State Commissioner of Police, Muhammed Dalijan, disclosed that survivors of a military onslaught were behind the explosion that rocked the state on Wednesday.
“This Lakurawa group, after being dislodged by the Army in Sokoto and Kebbi, are now searching for new territories,” Dalijan explained during a Channels Television interview. “They planted a bomb under a bridge, and when a motorist passed over it, the explosion killed the driver and seriously injured three others.”
The police commissioner highlighted a critical distinction in the bandits’ evolving tactics. Traditionally, Zamfara bandits have not possessed the technical expertise to create improvised explosive devices (IEDs). This new development suggests potential external influence or training, raising serious concerns about the group’s capabilities.
“Planting bombs in Zamfara is a new development,” Dalijan stressed. “We are 100 percent certain the Lakurawa group is responsible, as local bandits do not have the capacity to manufacture such devices.”
The Defence Headquarters has responded to this emerging threat, with Major General Buba Edward vowing to dismantle the Lakurawa group’s operational capabilities. The military also criticised residents for not promptly alerting security personnel about suspicious activities.
Meanwhile, Atsi Kefas, sister of Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas, was reportedly shot by a police escort during a violent ambush on Thursday. The incident occurred along Kente Road in Wukari Local Government Area while Atsi and her mother, Jumai, were travelling.
According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication, gunmen attacked the family’s convoy. In the ensuing confrontation, a police officer assigned to escort the family allegedly “accidentally shot Atsi” while attempting to repel the attackers.
