  • a rape in Bournemouth in 1999,

  • and another sexual assault in Westminster between 2004 and 2005.

Brand has previously denied all allegations against him, describing them as “very, very hurtful” and insisting his relationships were “always consensual.” The charges follow a joint investigation by the Sunday Times, the Times, and Channel 4‘s Dispatches aired in September 2023, which revealed multiple serious allegations against him.

Jaswant Narwal of the Crown Prosecution Service stated, “We have carefully reviewed the evidence after a police investigation into allegations made following the broadcast of a Channel 4 documentary in September 2023. We have concluded that Russell Brand should be charged with offences including rape, sexual assault and indecent assault.”

Brand was ordered to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on May 2, though he is believed to be in the United States. In such cases, prosecutors typically seek to agree on the defendant’s return, with extradition being considered if he does not cooperate.

Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, who is leading the investigation, said that the women who have made reports continue to receive support from specially trained officers. The investigation remains open, with authorities encouraging anyone affected by the case or with relevant information to come forward.

Brand rose to prominence as a stand-up comedian before becoming a popular television and radio presenter, notably hosting Big Brother’s Big Mouth in the mid-2000s. His career has included hosting roles on BBC radio, Hollywood film appearances, and, more recently, cultivating a large online following for his views on politics and society.

The Crown Prosecution Service has reminded everyone that criminal proceedings are active and that the defendant has the right to a fair trial.
