The men’s final promises compelling drama as top seed Jannik Sinner prepares to face defending champion Carlos Alcaraz on Sunday, following semifinal victories that showcased both the changing of the guard in men’s tennis and the unpredictable nature of sport.

Sinner’s 6-4, 7-5, 7-6 (7-3) victory over Novak Djokovic in a tense semifinal encounter ended the Serbian legend’s hopes of winning a standalone record 25th Grand Slam title. The match carried emotional weight as the 38-year-old Djokovic, clearly affected by age catching up with his legendary career, waved farewell to an adoring crowd on Court Philippe Chatrier after placing his racquet bags down.

Djokovic’s Challenge Against Youth

Djokovic could not get past Jannik this time

The 23-year-old Italian, playing only his second tournament back after a three-month ban for failing two doping tests, demonstrated the nerveless quality that has made him world number one. Djokovic, aiming to become the oldest Grand Slam men’s singles champion, tried various tactics, including baseline duels, drop shots, and serve-and-volley approaches, but Sinner proved virtually impossible to break down as he was relentlessly consistent.

Age appeared to be Djokovic’s ultimate opponent. While his quality and fighting spirit kept him within touching distance of Sinner, it never truly felt like he could snap his three-match losing streak against the Italian. The constant pressure forced Djokovic into loose groundstrokes and poorly executed drop shots, with the opening set swinging Sinner’s way after he broke serve in the fifth game.

An emotional Djokovic
Off he goes

Although Djokovic’s level improved in the second set, including two holds to love and putting scrutiny on Sinner’s serve, he couldn’t find the breakthrough he needed. An animated Djokovic roared at the crowd after saving a break point in the fifth game and looked to the heavens in frustration when another poor return handed over the break in his next service game.

Even after managing to break back for 5-5, Djokovic lost serve again as Sinner sealed a two-set lead. Despite needing treatment for an upper left leg issue before the third set, Sinner remained unfazed and absorbed most of what Djokovic threw at him, including saving three set points in a tense 5-4 game that featured further drama with Djokovic arguing over a line call.

Sinner quickly took control of the decisive tie-break, helped by Djokovic hitting into the net for 3-0, setting up the tantalising meeting with Alcaraz in their first Grand Slam final encounter.

Alcaraz’s Abbreviated Semi-Final

The Spanish second seed advanced to his second successive Roland Garros final under unfortunate circumstances, as eighth seed Lorenzo Musetti was forced to retire injured in the fourth set of their semifinal. Alcaraz led 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-0, 2-0 when the Italian, who was aiming to reach his first major final, could no longer continue due to physical struggles.

“I want to win, but not like this.”

“It’s never fair. I want to win, but not like this,” said Alcaraz, reflecting the sportsmanship that has endeared him to tennis fans worldwide.

The pair were the clear favourites before the clay-court Grand Slam tournament began and will now write another chapter in their developing rivalry. With either Sinner or Alcaraz winning the trophy, it means the dominant pair have swept up the past six major titles between them, signalling a new era in men’s tennis.

Alcaraz had not been at his clinical best during his title defence, and Musetti promised to be his sternest test yet. Both players had been the leading clay-court performers on the ATP Tour this year, winning more matches than anyone else and going deep at the most important tournaments.

Two high-quality, competitive sets demonstrated why their semifinal was anticipated as a potential classic. But once Alcaraz levelled the match, he unleashed his attacking shots to devastating effect while also benefiting from Musetti’s increasing physical struggles.

Musetti had to make the painful decision to let go

Musetti, who had reached the semifinals of all three clay-court Masters tournaments before achieving the same at Roland Garros, needed treatment for a thigh problem at the end of the third set. Questions about his mentality and belief in beating the very best on the biggest stage had been raised previously, but he had shown no signs of lacking faith by taking the opening set against Alcaraz.

After losing twice to the Spaniard on clay this season in Monte Carlo and Rome, Musetti appeared ready for the challenge. However, once Alcaraz locked in at the start of the second-set tie-break and took the third of his five set points to level the match, the contest quickly deteriorated.

Musetti felt a problem in his left leg when serving and won just five points in a 22-minute third set. After two visits from the physiotherapist and still unable to move freely, he made the difficult decision to shake hands with Alcaraz at the net.

As Roland Garros prepares to wind down, the men’s finals promise to deliver exceptional tennis and potentially historic moments that will be remembered long after the clay dust settles in Paris.
