Alcaraz survived a Fritz scare to keep his Wimbledon dream alive. His quest for an unprecedented third consecutive Wimbledon title nearly derailed in spectacular fashion before the defending champion clawed his way back from the brink to defeat Taylor Fritz in a pulsating four-set thriller that showcased both his vulnerability and his champion’s heart.

The world number two appeared to be cruising toward another routine victory when he grabbed a commanding two-sets-to-one lead, but Fritz had other plans. The American, who has built half his career victories on grass courts, refused to fold under the pressure of Centre Court and the weight of Alcaraz’s reputation.
What followed was a fourth-set tie-break that will be remembered as one of the tournament’s defining moments. Fritz surged ahead with five consecutive points, bringing himself within touching distance of forcing a decisive fifth set and potentially derailing Alcaraz’s championship defence.
The final scoreline of 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 hardly tells the story of a match that swung dramatically between two players operating at the peak of their powers.
“It was a really difficult match. It was tough with the conditions, really hot,” Alcaraz admitted afterwards, his relief evident. “I am just happy in the four sets, saving two set points. I am really proud about the way I stayed calm.”
The victory extends Alcaraz’s winning streak to 24 matches and sets up a Sunday final that tennis fans have been anticipating. He will face world number one Jannik Sinner, who ousted seven-time champion Novak Djokovic in three sets, 6-3, 6-3, 6-4.
Alcaraz savoured the moment while trying to stay grounded about his championship prospects. “This is my dream, stepping on these kinds of courts and playing these beautiful courts at the most beautiful tournaments in the world,” he said. “I don’t want to think about Sunday, I just want to think about this moment.”

Meanwhile, Sinner took just an hour and 55 minutes to squash Novak Djokovic’s hope of reaching the finals.
“I cannot believe. It’s a tournament I always watched when I was young, and I would have never imagined I could play here in the final. It shows I’m growing as a player on all surfaces. I struggled a lot five years ago when I started on this surface. Now I’m moving much better,” Sinner said after his match.
For Djokovic, the defeat means the end of a proud run of having made the final here in every edition since 2017.
