The Relief, Employment and Vital Infrastructure for the Vulnerable in Emergencies (REVIVE) project, funded with $10 million from South Korea, will operate through July 2026 across six provinces, including Badakhshan, Zabul, Daikundi, Faryab, Khost, and Nangarhar. The programme aims to bridge immediate humanitarian needs with longer-term recovery efforts.

UNDP Resident Representative Stephen Rodriques described the initiative as extending beyond traditional humanitarian response to help communities regain control over their futures. The project is concerned with creating sustainable opportunities while addressing climate resilience, women’s empowerment, and support for displaced populations and returnees.

The programme will focus on generating emergency employment opportunities, rehabilitating essential infrastructure, and improving food security at the community level. These interventions are designed to provide immediate relief while building foundations for longer-term stability in areas hardest hit by Afghanistan’s economic collapse.

South Korean Chargé d’affaires Sung-hwan Moon highlighted his country’s commitment to supporting Afghan civilians, particularly women, children, and refugees, during the current crisis. He characterised the REVIVE project as part of South Korea’s flagship humanitarian initiative with UNDP, aimed at helping communities rebuild livelihoods and restore hope.

The project launch comes as Afghanistan continues facing severe economic challenges following the Taliban’s return to power in 2021, with international sanctions and frozen assets contributing to widespread unemployment and humanitarian needs. The UN has repeatedly called for sustained international support to address the crisis affecting millions of Afghans.

The REVIVE initiative represents continued international engagement with Afghanistan’s population despite political constraints, focusing humanitarian assistance on direct community support rather than government institutions. The project’s emphasis on infrastructure rehabilitation and employment creation reflects efforts to provide practical assistance while building local capacity for resilience.

Officials noted that the programme’s design incorporates lessons learnt from previous humanitarian interventions, with particular attention to ensuring assistance reaches the most vulnerable populations across diverse geographical and ethnic communities in the targeted provinces.
