In celebrating literature, film, and cultural exchange, New York University’s Accra campus marked its 20th anniversary with a special screening of “The Man Died,” a film adaptation of Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka’s renowned prison memoir. The event, held on October 11, 2024, showcased the film alongside other notable works, drawing attention to African literature’s global impact.
Directed by Awam Ampa, a Professor of Drama at NYU, “The Man Died” is garnering significant interest from the film industry. At least three major global streaming platforms and international distribution channels are reviewing the film, signaling its potential for widespread release.
The screening in Accra is part of an extensive festival tour that will take “The Man Died” across Nigeria, Ghana, Europe, and North America before its cinematic release. This tour underscores the film’s importance as a cultural bridge, bringing Soyinka’s powerful narrative to diverse audiences worldwide.
Notable attendees at the NYU Accra screening included the film’s Executive Producer, Femi Odugbemi, and Associate Producers Jahman Anikulapo and Makin Soyinka. Dr. Wale Okediran, Secretary-General of the Pan African Writers Association (PAWA), was also present.
