A new initiative, Work Reimagined StoryLab, is offering financial support to journalists and content creators who want to spotlight the evolving landscape of work across Africa. Applications are now open for grants of up to $3,500.
The programme, launched through a partnership between Africa No Filter and the Ford Foundation, aims to create compelling narratives around labour issues as Africa’s workforce increasingly adapts to digital transformation.
According to the announcement released on Wednesday, while digital opportunities promise economic inclusion, they also present significant challenges, including low wages, job insecurity, and exploitation by international corporations.
The programme comes as outsourcing from Global North companies continues to fuel the rise of remote work, freelancing, and gig-based employment across the continent, fundamentally changing traditional employment structures.
Successful applicants will receive not only financial support but also mentorship, skills development, and access to exclusive data on Africa’s employment trends. The programme also promises to help connect content creators with publishing opportunities in influential media outlets.
The initiative is open to content creators, podcasters, and journalists from both Africa and its diaspora. Applicants must demonstrate a following of at least 2,000 across social media platforms and have an interest in producing content about labour issues and workers’ rights.
Applications remain open until April 30, 2025, with content creation expected to take place between June and October following a training session in early June.
The initiative represents part of a growing movement to ensure that Africa’s digital transformation benefits local workers and economies rather than simply creating new forms of exploitation in the global marketplace.
Interested applicants can submit their proposals before the deadline of 11:59 PM GMT on April 30, 2025.
