The Federal House of Representatives has urged the federal government to suspend the implementation of the controversial Samoa Agreement over the alleged LGBTQ clause.
The Deputy Minority Leader, Aliyu Madaki, and 87 other members of the green chamber moved a motion of urgent public importance, prompting this call during the Tuesday plenary.
The legislative chamber therefore directed its committee on national planning to investigate the agreement within four weeks and report back for further legislative action.
The Samoa Agreement, which is a legal framework for the European Union’s relationship with 79 countries, which includes 48 African, 16 Caribbean, and 15 Pacific countries, had raised dust in the public after one of the national dailies published a story alleging that the agreement has a clause that legalises LGBTQ in Nigeria.
Though the federal government had denied this claim, stating that Nigeria has an existing law against same-sex relationships, it has, however, threatened legal action against the media house.
