Tragedy struck on Monday at the Zoological Garden of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ile, Osun State, when a nine-year-old male lion killed a veterinary technologist.
The victim, identified as Mr. Olabode Olawuyi, who was a veterinary technologist, was said to have been in charge of the zoological garden for over a decade.
The university’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Abiodun Olarewaju, issued a press release stating that Mr. Olawuyi, who had faithfully served as the head of the Zoological Garden for over a decade, fell victim to the lion’s aggression while tending to the wild animals within their enclosure.
”Mr. Olabode Olawuyi, a veterinary technologist who has been in charge of the zoological garden for over a decade, was attacked this afternoon, Monday, February 19, 2024, by a nine-year-old male lion when he was feeding them in their den at the zoological garden of the university,” he stated.
According to the university spokesman, the other members of staff who were at the scene of the incident did everything within their power to rescue their boss, but the wild animal had already caused severe injuries to the deceased.
Mr. Olarewaju said that the management team, led by the Vice Chancellor, abruptly ended an ongoing meeting to conduct an on-the-spot assessment upon hearing the sad news.
“The university management has sent a delegation to the widow and children of the deceased, imploring them to take solace in God, who gives life and also has the power to take life,” he stated.
