The closure affects both diplomatic missions as they observe the U.S. federal holiday, which honours American military personnel who died in service to their country.
Originally known as Decoration Day, it was first celebrated after the Civil War and was chosen because flowers would be in bloom. To mark the date, people left flowers on the graves of soldiers who had died fighting

The holiday, which also marks the unofficial start to summer, is observed annually on the last Monday of May in the United States, with most Americans receiving the day off from work.
The nation commemorates the holiday with a service at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia, with the president typically laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
Across the country, people wear red poppies in tribute to the fallen soldiers and participate in parades.
The holiday, which is marked with a national moment of remembrance at 3 pm, serves as a national day of remembrance for fallen service members. The day didn’t become a federal holiday until 1971.
Normal operations at both facilities are expected to resume following the holiday.
