The appeal came during the commemoration of International Mother Earth Day on April 22, a day established by a 2009 UN General Assembly resolution. The observance highlights the Earth and its ecosystems as our shared home and emphasises the need for their protection to improve livelihoods, address climate change, and halt biodiversity loss.

Speaking at an event in Abuja, the Director of the UN Information Centre, Mr. Roland Kayanja, stated the urgency of creating these climate action plans. Represented by the Digital Media Assistant, Mrs. Bolanle Olumekor, Kayanja specifically urged G20 countries to lead by example. He stressed the importance of tackling pollution, stopping biodiversity loss, and securing financing for environmental protection, expressing hope that 2025 could mark a turning point for planetary health.

Dr. Umar Yakasai, Director General of the Tinubu Campaign Organisation, reinforced the call for collective action, highlighting humanity’s responsibility to preserve nature for future generations through initiatives such as tree planting.

Also speaking at the event, Mr. Roland Echee, Director of Parks and Recreation in Abuja, discussed the intricate value of Mother Earth and advocated for sustainable practices.

Hajiya Fatima Kachallah, President of the Association of Flower Nurseries and Landscaping Practitioners of Abuja, added that tree planting could help mitigate climate change dangers. She called for the adoption of environmentally friendly practices and noted the importance of environmental education, conservation, and sustainability in preserving the planet.
