UNESCO has launched a new initiative to combat the rising tide of online disinformation and hate speech in Nigeria, emphasising the critical role of media literacy in the digital age.
Speaking at the 2024 Global Media and Information Literacy Week in Kano recently, the head of Abuja Office and UNESCO Representative to Nigeria, Abdourahamane Diallo, highlighted the urgent need to address digital misinformation in Africa’s most populous nation. “Digital networks have become the preferred platforms for expression and interaction, creating a global village that requires new literacy skills,” said Diallo, represented by Yachat Nuhu.
The event, themed “The New Digital Frontiers of Information,” brought together education officials, media experts, and youth leaders to discuss strategies for navigating the evolving digital landscape.

Keynote speaker Dr. Chido Onumah urged Nigerian youth leaders to develop critical analysis skills for news media content. “Integrating media literacy into grassroots organisations is crucial for building a more secure, peaceful, and united nation,” Onumah said.
Kano State officials, including Information Commissioner Baba Halilu Dantiye and Education Commissioner Haruna Doguwa, endorsed the initiative, noting the importance of media literacy in developing an informed younger generation.
The MILID Foundation, an international non-profit organisation, concluded the event by presenting certificates to participants who completed media literacy training.
Observed annually from October 24-31, Global Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Week serves as a pivotal international campaign to mobilise stakeholders worldwide in promoting digital and media awareness. The week-long celebration provides a platform for countries to highlight their progress in making media and information literacy accessible to all citizens, ultimately working toward a more informed and digitally competent global community.
