The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has authorised eleven institutions, including six federal universities and Nigerian Breweries, to generate their electricity.
Nigerian Breweries Plc received the largest allocation, with approval to generate 41 megawatts (MW) of power across its facilities in Abia, Oyo, and Enugu states, according to NERC’s third quarter report for 2024.
The universities granted permits include the University of Calabar and its Teaching Hospital (7MW), the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (12MW), the University of Abuja (3MW), Michael Okpara University of Agriculture (3MW), Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta (3MW), and Federal University Gashua (1.50MW).
The Nigerian Defence Academy in Kaduna also secured approval to generate 2.50MW.
These captive power generation permits, totalling 63.36MW, allow institutions to produce electricity exclusively for their consumption, potentially reducing their dependence on Nigeria’s national grid.
“Captive power generation permits are issued to entities that intend to own and maintain power plants exclusively for their own consumption, that is, no sale of electricity generated from the plant to any third party,” NERC explained, stating that permit holders cannot sell electricity to third parties.
