An unidentified female staff member at the University of Ilesa in Osun State lost her life in a tragic car accident on Wednesday.
The incident occurred when a truck transporting a container full of cashew nuts lost control on the Ilesa/Ibodi expressway, only a few metres from the university’s gate.
Eyewitnesses recounted the scenes of panic and frantically made a rescue effort as the victim’s car became ensnared beneath the weight of the fallen container. The accident triggered a traffic gridlock on the usually bustling roadway, with vehicles involved in the crash obstructing part of the expressway.
According to university sources, the deceased had finished her shift and was heading home when the accident occurred. She was killed in the crash when the out-of-control truck slammed into her path.
“The vehicle driven by our colleague was trapped under a container filled with cashew nuts being conveyed by a truck. The woman left campus after the day’s work. She was driving towards town when the accident occurred. She is feared dead,” a senior staff member of the university, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said.
Confirming the terrible occurrence, the spokeswoman for the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Osun State, Kehinde Adeleke, stated that the victim was found lifeless in the wreckage of her car.
“Our operatives and other security agencies were at the scene of the accident. The driver of the car, a woman, died,” she said.
