The United States Mission in Nigeria has imposed strict travel restrictions on its diplomatic personnel and their families. Due to heightened security concerns, it prohibits non-official visits to Nigerian military installations and government facilities in Abuja.

The travel ban, announced Saturday, affects all U.S. Embassy employees and their family members, reflecting what officials described as “increased security concerns arising from current global developments.”
The diplomatic advisory represents a significant escalation in security precautions, suggesting intelligence assessments have identified potential threats to American personnel and facilities in Nigeria’s capital city.
In addition to the staff restrictions, the U.S. Mission issued a comprehensive security advisory to American citizens throughout Nigeria, urging heightened vigilance and behavioural modifications to reduce exposure to potential threats.
The embassy specifically advised U.S. citizens to “stay alert in public places, with particular attention to location and venues where Westerners, expatriates, and government officials frequent.” This guidance suggests concerns about targeted attacks against foreign nationals and diplomatic personnel.
American citizens have been advised to avoid large gatherings and limit unnecessary travel, while also breaking predictable routines that could make them vulnerable to surveillance or targeting. The embassy also recommended familiarising oneself with emergency exits when entering buildings and reviewing personal security plans.
Despite the security restrictions, the U.S. Mission stated that both the Consular Section at Embassy Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos remain fully operational and open to the public.
The embassy’s reference to “current global developments” as the basis for increased security measures suggests the restrictions may be related to broader international tensions rather than Nigeria-specific threats. However, officials did not elaborate on the specific nature of the security concerns.
The travel restrictions apply specifically to Nigerian military sites and government venues in Abuja, indicating that the perceived threats may be concentrated in areas with significant security infrastructure or government presence.
