The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has announced a new initiative aimed at improving primary healthcare across the country. The agency is now seeking concepts from qualified local Nigerian organisations to implement the USAID Primary Health Care Improvement Programme.
The programme aims to support a unified country plan, budget, and reporting system, aiming to transform the health sector to provide a healthier, more productive future for all Nigerians.
The initiative will focus on addressing both supply and demand issues in selected primary and secondary referral facilities, developing networks of service providers, and reducing disease-specific silos to ensure continuous and well-coordinated care across patient lifespans. The selected implementer(s) will collaborate with other USAID-Nigeria activities in areas such as human resources for health, healthcare financing (including health insurance support), community health, social and behaviour change communication, data use, and health information system strengthening.
Subject to availability, USAID intends to provide up to $40 million in total funding for one or more awards. The initial period, covering the first three years, will be funded up to $24 million, while the renewal period for years four and five is budgeted at up to $16 million. The anticipated total period of performance is five years.
Eligibility for this programme is restricted to local Nigerian organisations. USAID defines a “local entity” as an organisation that is legally organised under Nigerian law, has its principal place of business or operations in Nigeria, is majority-owned (51%) by Nigerian citizens or lawful permanent residents, and is managed by a governing body with a majority of Nigerian citizens or lawful permanent residents.
USAID encourages applications from organisations that have not previously received financial assistance from the agency, broadening the pool of potential partners in this crucial healthcare initiative.
The deadline for proposals is November 15, 2024.
