Nigeria’s First Lady Sen. Oluremi Tinubu was represented by Hajiya Nana Shettima at the unveiling ceremony to name the ICT block at the Maryam Babangida National Centre for Women Development (MBNCWD) after her mother-in-law, Abibat Mogaji, President Bola Tinubu’s late mother.
Speaking on Remi Tinubu’s behalf, Hajiya Nana Shettima emphasised the vital role of information and communication technology (ICT) in transforming women’s lives.
“Access to information and communication technology is no longer a luxury but a necessity,” Shettima said during the unveiling ceremony on Tuesday.
The late Abibat Mogaji, who was the mother of President Bola Tinubu, was described by the Minister of Women Affairs, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, as a “resilient matriarch, mother, and an Amazon” who championed women’s empowerment and humanitarian services.
“We are gathered here to celebrate and honour the remarkable values of gender inclusion, women empowerment, and humanitarian services rendered by a resilient matriarch, mother, and an Amazon, the Late Chief Alhaja Abibat Mogaji,” Sulaiman-Ibrahim said.
The minister stated that Mogaji’s legacy should serve as a testament to the relentless pursuit of women’s rights and the creation of a more compassionate society.
“As we unveil the new name of the ICT block, let it be a symbol of our pledge to strive harder for the rights of women, to honour their contributions to our country. To build a society where every woman and child can fulfil their potential with dignity and pride,” she added.
Director General of MBNCWD, Dr, Asabe Vilita-Bashir, highlighted Mogaji’s advocacy for women’s economic empowerment and grassroots development, stating that the ICT block should serve as a constant reminder of the need for inclusivity in their programmes and plans.
Mrs. Felicia Sani, President of the Nigeria Market Women Association, lauded Mogaji as a great women mobiliser and advocate for women’s economic empowerment, urging the government to establish international markets nationwide to empower women and generate revenue for the country.
