The second edition of the Word Spelling Festival, an initiative of Poets in Nigeria (PIN), concluded successfully with 100 contestants from 17 schools competing in the annual literacy competition held in the Ori-Okuta (Agric) community, Ikorodu.
The event, curated by Ambassador Anidebe Prince Edwin, showed significant improvement over its maiden edition. During the ceremony, organisers distributed cash and book prizes to all winners.
Balogun Malik of First Fruit Schools emerged as the overall winner, taking first place in the keenly contested competition. His schoolmate, Racheal Ojediran, secured second position, giving First Fruit Schools a dominant performance in the top ranks.
Ibrahim Sulaiman from Prosperity and Peace Gathering Academy claimed third place, rounding out the top three performers in the spelling competition.
The Word Spelling Festival is designed as an annual programme to impact the underserved Ori-Okuta (Agric) community in Ikorodu and surrounding areas. The initiative aims to promote literacy and educational excellence among students in the region.
Speaking for the PIN Initiative, Eriata Oribhabor, praised the management and staff of participating schools and the organising committee for their contributions to the event’s success.
The festival’s growth is evident in the robust participation, with 17 schools sending a total of 100 contestants to compete in various spelling categories. This is an increased engagement compared to the inaugural edition.
The event organisers expressed satisfaction with the improvement in organisation and participation levels, indicating the festival’s growing acceptance within the educational community.
Organisers have already announced plans for the Word Spelling Festival 2026, suggesting the initiative will continue as an annual fixture in the academic calendar for schools in Ikorodu and neighbouring communities.
The Word Spelling Festival is organised by Poets in Nigeria as part of their broader mission to promote literary excellence and educational development across Nigerian communities.
