The Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) in Lagos has partnered with the United Nations International Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to provide one million Nigerian females with basic educational skills through the UNICEF Girls’ Education Skills and Partnership.
YABATECH’s Rector, Dr. Ibraheem Abdul, made the news at the start of a five-day programme on girls’ education skills and partnership, financed by the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and UNICEF.
Through this partnership, YABATECH intends to empower 5,000 girls in Lagos State alone by enhancing their entrepreneurial abilities, employability, and information and communication technology (ICT) capabilities. Dr. Abdul stated that equipping girls with ICT skills is essential for securing their sustainable future in a fast-changing digital landscape, even beyond bridging the gender gap.
“Empowering our girls with ICT skills is not just about addressing the gender gap; it’s about equipping them with tools for a sustainable future, and we are committed to providing our students with the necessary skills to thrive in today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape. As far as the National Skills Qualification Framework is concerned, YABATECH is leading the trend by tapping into its objectives of targeting 5,000 women for profitable skills acquisition,” Dr. Abdul said.
“This is the first workshop in the college that will strictly target girls’ empowerment. It is very expedient to give the women a conducive atmosphere for acquiring skills, and the college has what it takes to ensure that the workshop is successful,” he added.
The Executive Secretary of the National Board for Technical Education, Pro. Idris Bugaje, commended YABATECH for its dedication to skill development in Nigeria and stressed the critical role that education plays in shaping Nigeria’s future.
“The future of Nigeria depends on the quality of education we provide our young people, and initiatives like this are crucial in ensuring that we remain competitive in the global economy,” he stated.
