Youths have been encouraged to learn technology skills to contribute significantly to Nigeria’s growth.
The founder of the Teens World Foundation, Kossy Okonkwo, made this statement during the organisation’s annual youth programme, “Teen Tech Expo 24,” which was hosted at the University of Lagos.
The “Tech Beyond Borders: Empowering Tomorrow’s Tech Innovators” event brought together kids from secondary schools across Lagos State and university undergraduates to advocate for excellent education through tech skill acquisition.
Okonkwo stated that the Teen Tech Conference’s major goal is to “raise mentally strong, self-aware, and highly skilled teenagers, recognising their significant contribution to the growth of the Nigerian economy.”
She also said that the event is aimed at addressing the pressing need for technology adoption among teenagers to empower and educate them.
“The ultimate vision is to cultivate a generation of strong-willed teenage leaders who are well-equipped for the technological advancement of their nation,” she added.
She emphasised the need to encourage young people to learn technology since it will help them become aware of the country’s difficulties and actively seek solutions, thus contributing to the progress of the nation’s economy.
She stated that the yearly event would help reduce unemployment rates and provide jobs for young people locally and abroad, adding that “even as they transit into adulthood, the event strives to secure a brighter future for both the teenagers and the nation at large.”
On the need for the young ones to concentrate on the positive use of technology, Okonkwo said that teenagers are inventing programmes that are useful to mankind in countries like the United States, Russia, and Germany and stressed the need to have the same replicated in Nigeria.
“If our youths are exposed to opportunities in technology, the country’s future will be great,” she said.
