In a press conference held on August 14th, 2023, the Zone A Peoples’ Assembly (ZAPA) addressed concerns about the leadership situation within the Tiv Kingdom. Speaking on behalf of ZAPA,

His Royal Majesty Prof. J. O. Ayatse-Begha U Tiv emphasised the need for unity and progress in the Tiv race. ZAPA expressed their belief that King Ayatse’s leadership could bring prosperity to the Tiv people.

The assembly raised concerns about the Secretary to the Government of the Federation’s, recent actions. They called for George Akume to prioritise the interests of the entire Tiv community rather than his personal affiliations. ZAPA cited instances where Akume’s actions seemed to favour his micro-community of Jemgbagh at the expense of the broader Tiv population.

Of particular concern was the alleged favouritism displayed in ministerial appointments and administrative roles. ZAPA questioned the fairness of such appointments, expressing worry that these actions might sow discord within the Tiv community. The assembly also raised apprehensions about Akume’s involvement in potential political opposition against Governor Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia and his rumoured intent to remove Barr. Emmanuel Jime from his position.

In closing, ZAPA urged King Ayatse to use his influence to address the situation promptly, as they feared that without intervention, the growing discontent could escalate into a major crisis, affecting the unity and stability of the Tiv race.
