For many Nigerians dreaming of owning a decent home, abandoned housing estates may soon become symbols of renewed hope rather than wasted opportunities.
The Federal Government has pledged to rehabilitate, upgrade and complete viable abandoned housing projects across the country before the end of 2026, as part of efforts to reduce Nigeria’s housing deficit and provide more affordable homes for citizens.
The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Muttaqa Rabe Darma, made the commitment during an inspection of an abandoned housing estate under the National Housing Programme in the Kubwa-Karsana District of the Federal Capital Territory.
Darma said the government would ensure that abandoned government housing properties are brought back to life, completed and put to productive use.
According to him, completing the projects would allow Nigerians to benefit from investments that have already been made while preventing public resources from being wasted.
The minister said the initiative forms part of the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Housing Agenda, which seeks to improve access to decent and affordable housing for Nigerians.
He expressed concern over the continued abandonment of government housing projects, stressing that public assets should be completed and made available to citizens instead of being left to deteriorate.
“The Federal Government would take decisive steps to upgrade and complete viable abandoned housing projects across the country, to deliver more affordable and decent homes to Nigerians,” he said.
The renewed commitment comes alongside a proposal by the Housing Development Advocacy Network (HDAN) for a more coordinated approach to housing finance.
In a new report, HDAN called for the establishment of a national mortgage guarantee and inclusion framework that would bring together institutions including the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria, Nigerian Mortgage Refinance Company, Ministry of Finance Incorporated Real Estate Investment Fund and Family Homes Fund Limited.

The group also recommended the involvement of commercial banks, primary mortgage banks and other relevant stakeholders to make housing finance more accessible.
HDAN said the proposed framework should extend beyond salaried workers to include traders, artisans, farmers, entrepreneurs and other Nigerians whose incomes may be legitimate but irregular.
The organisation noted that Nigeria already has several institutions and housing-finance interventions that could support a stronger mortgage market if their efforts were better coordinated.
It argued that the country does not necessarily need more housing-finance institutions, but rather stronger connections among existing ones to provide long-term funding, share risks and expand financial inclusion.
Together, the government’s pledge to revive abandoned housing projects and HDAN’s call for broader mortgage access point towards a housing system where more Nigerians can move closer to the dream of owning a decent home.
For families currently struggling to secure affordable accommodation, the revival of unfinished estates could mean more than completed buildings. It could mean new beginnings, greater stability and the happiness that comes with having a place to call home.
