“The prizes should include something that the winner and family can keep to remember the victory, not just a cash prize that might be immediately spent,” he said.

According to him, the prizes for each category are as follows:

1st Prize – An iPad and ₦50,000 cash

2nd Prize – A school bag and ₦20,000 cash

3rd Prize – A digital wristwatch and ₦10,000 cash

He further disclosed that all participants would receive consolation prizes, including branded T-shirts and exercise books.

Highlighting the cultural significance of the competition, Okenyodo noted that the event aims to promote indigenous languages among younger generations.

“The aim of the competition is to develop our children through our culture and language. Any language that is not promoted to the next generation faces the risk of extinction. The dream is to take this initiative national, covering many other languages,” he said.

The competition takes place on Saturday, 2nd August 2025, at the AkweyaTV Studio, Gwarinpa, Abuja, at 9 am.

The Akweya Language Speaking Competition is one of the major events marking AkweyaTV’s fifth anniversary. AkweyaTV first hosted a national language-speaking contest in 2023, featuring four Benue languages: Idoma, Igede, Tiv, and Akweya.

Okenyodo also acknowledged key supporters of the competition, including Chief Abba Adaudu (Oyalewa K’Idoma), Chief Michael Oglegba (Ebo K’Idoma and Benue State Commissioner for Finance), Chief Kennedy Angbo (Member representing Otukpo/Akpa at the Benue State House of Assembly), and Mr. Chris Angwu (CEO, De Memories Hotel, Masaka, Nasarawa State).
