In a press release issued Friday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nigeria stated that ongoing collaboration with international partners, including the U.S., had “led to precision hits on terrorist targets in Nigeria by air strikes in the North West.” The statement confirms the core of President Donald Trump’s Christmas night announcement, while framing the operation within the context of bilateral partnership and sovereignty.

The Nigerian government’s carefully worded release emphasised that the cooperation is “consistent with international law” and “mutual respect for sovereignty.” It outlined that the partnership involves “the exchange of intelligence, strategic coordination, and other forms of support” aligned with shared security commitments.

“The Federal Government continues to work closely with its partners through established diplomatic and security channels to weaken terrorist networks,” the statement read, signed by Ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa.

Notably, the Nigerian statement struck a unifying national tone, diverging from the religious framing in President Trump’s announcement. It asserted that “terrorist violence in any form whether directed at Christians, Muslims, or other communities remains an affront to Nigeria’s values,” and reiterated that all counter-terrorism efforts are guided by the principle of protecting all civilian lives and safeguarding national unity.

The confirmation from Abuja provides the official Nigerian perspective on the dramatic events, positioning the strikes as a product of joint planning and existing agreements, rather than a unilateral U.S. action. It underscores the government’s intent to demonstrate control over security processes within its borders while acknowledging critical foreign support.

The release concludes by stating the Ministry will continue to engage with partners and inform the public through official channels, suggesting further details on the operation and its outcomes may be forthcoming. The U.S. Africa Command has previously confirmed the strikes were coordinated with Nigerian authorities.
